PW (Physics Wallah), a leading unicorn Ed-Tech company, that has played a pivotal role in democratizing education at scale in India has announced the launch of its PWNSAT 2023 (Physics Wallah National Scholarship cum Admission Test). The exam will be conducted in both offline and online mode and will be open to students of class 6 to 12, as well as droppers, who are aspiring to study for JEE or NEET.

 

Ankit Gupta, CEO Vidyapeeth Offline, PW said, “The PWNSAT exam is our way of giving back to our robust student community and helping more students achieve their dreams of studying engineering or medicine. Last year, the PWNSAT exam was a huge success. The exam helped more than 1.1 lakh students and over 120 crores worth of scholarships were distributed. We believe that every student deserves access to quality education, regardless of their financial background.”

 

This year, Physics Wallah is offering scholarships worth 200 crores to students who perform well in the PWNSAT exam. The exam will be held on October 1st, 8th, and 15th, 2023 in offline mode and students can give the exam from 1st October to 15th October in online mode. Registration for the exam can be done through the PW website, and app, or at the nearest offline PW center now until October 15th, 2023. The results of the exam will be announced on October 20th, 2023.

 

Students will also be able to study at Vidyapeeth centers from experienced faculty members through these scholarships. The Vidyapeeth Centers are located across the country and offer a comprehensive curriculum covering everything students need to learn for JEE/NEET, and Physics Wallah consistently delivers exceptional results.

 

This year, Physics Wallah is expecting even more students to participate in the PWNSAT exam. The organisation is confident that the PWNSAT exam will help more students achieve their dreams of studying engineering or medicine.

Australian universities have witnessed a significant recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting an additional 42,830 students in April 2023, a remarkable increase from the previous year. This growing number of international students is a testament to the resilience of the Australian education sector, which has been steadily regaining its pre-pandemic strength.

 

Raghwa Gopal, CEO of education management company M Square Media (MSM), commented, “The surge in student numbers we're seeing is a strong indicator of the global trust in Australian universities. Despite the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, students worldwide are choosing Australia as their study destination, recognizing the quality and value of the education here.”

 

Economic Contributions of International Students

 

The influx of international students has significant economic implications. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, international students contributed over $40.1 billion to the Australian economy and supported more than 250,000 jobs. In 2022, despite the pandemic, international students still managed to contribute $25.5 billion to the economy. Furthermore, students pursuing education online added an extra $3.5 billion, reinforcing the value of international students to the Australian economy.

 

Gopal commented, “International students not only bring diverse perspectives to our classrooms, but they also significantly bolster the economy. Their contribution goes beyond the tuition fees; they also spend on housing, dining, transportation, and other services, thus supporting local businesses and creating jobs.”

 

Challenges for International Students

 

While the growth in student numbers is a positive sign, there have been reports of financial struggles and rising living costs affecting the student community. Many international students in Australia have experienced food insecurity, as a result of the financial stress of living and studying in a foreign country.

 

Despite these challenges, research shows a decline in the percentage of international students in Sydney and Melbourne experiencing financial insecurity, falling from 44 percent in 2019 to 30 percent in 2020. Gopal noted, “While it's encouraging to see this decline, it's crucial that we continue to support our international students and find ways to mitigate the financial challenges they face.”

 

Future of Australian Higher Education

 

Australia's decision during the pandemic to instruct international students to return to their home countries led to the loss of many students. However, efforts are being made to restore student enrollment to pre-pandemic levels.

 

As of December 2022, over 600,000 international students were studying in Australia, with a majority hailing from China and India. These figures indicate a bright future for Australia's international education sector, reflecting its global appeal and the high value placed on Australian education.

 

Gopal also noted, “The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by Australian universities have been remarkable. While there are still hurdles to overcome, the future of international education in Australia looks promising.”

Springer Nature has launched its first Academic Research Lab in India at Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, Faridabad.

The Springer Nature Academic Research Lab will facilitate faculty research into new areas while offering students a unique opportunity to explore interdisciplinary studies that extend beyond the boundaries of traditional programmes or departments. The main focus areas of the lab will include scientific writing and publishing, and effective collaboration in research. It will provide opportunities for students to develop technical skills, build networks, incubate ideas, and showcase innovation. It will also provide the research community, faculty and students a chance to interact with renowned researchers in their domain of expertise, twice every month and discuss and learn about the technical discoveries.

Commenting, Frank Vrancken Peeters, Chief Executive of Springer Nature, said, “Science, technology and research are the backbone of a nation. We are delighted to establish this academic research lab at Manav Rachna Educational Institutions which will not only make content of our various journals accessible for students and faculty members, but will also be the centre for knowledge sharing and incubation of ideas. The leadership at Manav Rachna Educational Institutions feels that the academic research lab in their campus will provide the students and faculty an opportunity to discuss, collaborate and incubate ideas which will lead to enhanced quality of research in the future.

Dr. Amit Bhalla, Vice President, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions said, “Establishment of Springer Nature Academic Research Lab shall create an ecosystem of researchers of different age groups from all walks of life. ~ Approximately 200 vulnerable children from 10 schools across Chennai, Gurgaon, New Delhi, Kanpur and Agra benefitted and got opportunity to improve their competencies in English and Mathematics ~

 

As our country braces itself to navigate through the third wave of COVID, World Vision India (WV India), the country’s largest child-focused humanitarian organization, focuses on ensuring that the education of the vulnerable children do not suffer. As one of the way to facilitate this- WV India collaborated with Global Indian International School (GIIS)-Singapore and conducted Community Virtual Class Learning (CVCL) for approximately 200 students of grade 4 to 5 level aged between 8 to 13 years from 10 schools across Chennai, Gurgaon, New Delhi, Kanpur and Agra.

CVCL is a virtual platform where the vulnerable students from lesser-privileged communities, are taught practical concepts that will have a learning impact in their lives. GIIS students from the 11th grade facilitated CVCL and tutored the students in English and Mathematics. English topics ranged from alphabets, nouns, tenses to poems, letter writing and even story telling. Mathematics topics ranged from simple addition, subtraction to profit & loss, area & perimeter, etc. As many as 2000 students from various school were analyzed during the baseline survey to select the most vulnerable who did not have age/grade appropriate learning outcomes. Then the best way to tutor and help them improve were outlined. Most sessions were in the children’s mother tongues to begin with until they were able to comprehend the study material in English.

“The Pilot of the CVCL project was undertaken in October to December 2020 and owing to its success we decided to scale it up to more schools in 2021. Many of the students from the vulnerable sections did not have access to the internet, digital training or amenities to try to improve their academic skills. We are thrilled to collaborate with an institution such as GIIS Singapore, who share our philosophy of results through sustained efforts rather than resorting to ad hoc measures. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the students from GIIS Singapore who took time off from their schedule and makes CVCL a great success. We are keen to further expand this program to more schools in India this year,” said, Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharya, Strategic Lead- Education, World Vision India.

 

“With the pandemic not going away, we definitely see the need for programs such as CVCL to provide opportunities for children from vulnerable sections, to equip themselves with skill sets which will hone their learning abilities. The students chosen for the program were those which needed help academically in their respective batches,” said Mr. Ashwin Gite, CAS Coordinator & Department Head, Humanities, Global Indian International School. “As per the baseline assessment, we received great results after CVCL, as about 70% of the students were able to read and comprehend English language, 35% of them were able to read newspapers and 70% also improved their competencies in simple arithmetic. This goes a long way to show how the right platforms and guidance can help these students improve their skills,” Mr Gite added.

Apart from improving their overall competencies in English and Mathematics, students also learned how to study through a virtual medium, which was a first for many. The exposure to the students from GIIS Singapore also acted as a platform for cross-fertilizations of ideas and an opportunity to engage with students from an International school and to pick up some of the best educational practices from them. On the other hand, the students from GIIS Singapore also got an opportunity to improve their preparatory and facilitation skills as well as have a cultural connect with India.

The school emphasizes on entrepreneurship and character development as part of its holistic learning framework, which allows students to participate in programmes like CVCL.

When someone asks Jai, what is your hobby, immediately comes the reply, “I like to play video games and watch game videos.” With the schools being closed and kids having lots of time at hand parents are finding it difficult to engage kids in productive activities. The prolonged working hours for parents are a spoil sport for kids.

Kids are wasting their time in watching television, playing video games and watching lame games videos said many parents we approached them.
We came across one such parent who prompted his kid to make those game videos himself.

When we spoke to parents, they said that the nine year old came to them and asked if they can make similar videos and post on youtube. With the little understanding of how this content is made the father asked Jai, “How you would make the video, do you know how to upload and how will you make the youtube channel?  Immediately came the reply, “I have already made the youtube channel on my id, created for school on gmail and I have made few videos as well, which I want to show you before I upload, I have even decided the name of the channel- Jai Gaming 22”.
When we spoke to father, he said, “Jai has left us with no option, he came to me with quite interesting, intelligent and most importantly cute videos in his cute voice. When we agreed he got his friends and our friends to subscribe his channel as well. First 15 subscribers he got for his channel. The only thing he is stopped from is using any bad words which are generally used by youtubers. For last two and a half months he has not missed even a single day when the video is not made or posted.”

Jai is a nine year old kid and his passion is playing video games, playing chess and jogging. He also loves to try different cuisines. He hates sleeping and is always forced to sleep. He loves reading story books and watching games videos. He loves his grandfather  who says that

Koshish karne walon ki kabhi haar nai hoti’. Always keep trying is his mantra after taking inspiration from his grandfather.

Palwal | How far can the simple act of faithfully following a qualified teacher’s instructions take someone in life? In the case of Nandini Singla, the answer is: to a good medical college in the country. A student of Aakash Institute in Palwal all Nandini did while preparing for her NEET exam was to just listen and follow what her teacher said.

Nandhini scored 705 marks out of 720 in NEET UG 2021 and secured AIR 75. She hopes to get into AIIMS Delhi. The dream of becoming a doctor took root in Nandini when she was in class X. She joined Aakash Institute’s three-year NEET coaching programme. Her special focus was on chemistry, a subject she found a little tough. Her strategy was simple: ask her teachers what she must be doing, and just do it. “It is very rare to come by a student like Nandini. She is obedient to the core. If I say focus on a chapter she would do, and if I say leave a subject, she would do, with full confidence in me,” says one of her teachers at Aakash. “She had no second thought.”

A major support for her is her father. He remained up to date with the progress his daughter was making in NEET preparation. He would attend all Parent Teacher Meetings. He would instantly buy the resource materials recommended for her studies. He would make sure that Nandini was not disturbed by her younger brother or any other children at home, when she was preparing for NEET from home, during the lockdown.

“Attend your classes regularly, revise your subjects everyday, and follow your teacher’s instructions,” are the tips she likes to give to the NEET aspirants.

In his comments about the meteoric progress Nandini has made in her studies, Mr Aakash Chaudhry, Managing Director, Aakash Educational Services Limited, said, “Brilliance is one thing but obedience is another. Students need both to achieve academic excellence. The story of Nandini is a profound proof. I am happy that our teachers could guide her in the right direction, and helped her crack the NEET exam with such a high score. They took the responsibility of making Nandini a doctor.
